21st century challenges are characterized by high potential impact, complexity and uncertainty. Understanding and addressing these types of challenges is an essential pre-requisite for meeting sustainability objectives and policies, and it can only be achieved through greater interdisciplinarity. This in turn requires significant changes to research programming and funding cycles at the national, European and international levels.
